Afternoon at Otter Lake

A birch tree stands tall and alone,
surveying the sandy bottom
and all who spend a day
under its watchful eye.

Startled ducks step on themselves
running from imagined hostility.
Sunfish dart between shadows
looking for snails floating above
the mud tracks of lazy mussels.

A young couple slowly kisses
the sun, skipping thick stones
not meant for the task, quietly
contemplating what can’t be changed.
