Nine Thirty Nine

It takes courage to say yes
to do a thing not knowing a thing
to push and fall and snatch

and run and fall and pull
and fight the boards
and look for eyes

in the striped short grass
with slanted sitting
and seconds ticking

to stand one last call
in a fake field protected
and reach, but lay down

with the courage it takes
to hurt yourself
and make others happy.
