My daughter wakes each morning and still sits
with me on the bench smelling of sleep.

A panicked lone finch looks
for family in a sky the size of its panic.

Two cottontails freeze when our eyes meet.
They spend so much time waiting

like the mulberry tree that holds its breath
for a chainsaw only to return year after…
