In the last light
of a summer sun,
ash leaves flicker

against dimming sky,
yapping like a pack
of distant hyenas deep

in spirited discussion
about how they came to be
so high off the ground.

A street light kicks on and
they don’t even notice,
content to debate

who will jump down first
and begin the long descent
into fall.
